Deaf Sisterhood
Aran is at a crossroads in her religious faith. A convert to Christianity in her teens, she has been interested in Islam for years.
And now that she has a partner who is a Muslim, there is an added reason for her to find out more about Islam.
As a young Deaf woman she is interested in finding out more about access and the Deaf Muslim community. Her exploration takes her to London, where she tries on the hijab (headscarf) and makes friends with three young Muslim women. She attends a special talk in her home city of Birmingham, and the first Islamic weekend retreat organised for Deaf and blind Muslims in Leeds.
Along the way she meets some women who have converted, and tries to separate culture and stereotypes from the religion itself. There are some challenging questions posed by her atheist mum, and a long-standing Christian friend.
This programme for BSLBT provides a fascinating glimpse into the Deaf Muslim community at a time when an estimated 5,200 British people are converting to Islam each year.
