Casablanca Calling

In Morocco, women are being employed as Muslim leaders - or Morchidat - for the first time.

The Morchidat have a mission: to empower women through the teachings of Islam and to challenge the attitudes which can foster extremism. In the mosques, they teach the Koran and advise the women who come to see them about everything from relationships with their husbands, to bringing up children, work, money, and neighbourhood disputes.

They mentor teenagers in schools and orphanages; they support patients in hospitals; and they go into prisons to mediate between the prisoners and their estranged families.

Their role is spiritual guide, leader, counsellor and friend. Casablanca Calling is an observational documentary which explores the lives of the women at the heart of this quiet social revolution.

We are currently filming in Morocco, thanks to the support of the CBA and Sundance. We will be building an outreach project, with the support of FACT. Casablanca Calling was profiled at BritDoc's Good Pitch, which has helped us reach this stage of development. Director is Rosa Rogers, and Associate Producer is Merieme Addou.
