Colour Coded Project
The Colour Coded project worked in a variety of informal ways with a group of young people in Birmingham, to explore the science of skin colour.
We received funding from the Wellcome Trust for this innovative piece of work, centred around a group of young people in Handsworth. We brought them together with dermatologists from Birmingham Children's Hospital to find out more about the science of skin colour.
They made a music video about their experience of being Black in Birmingham. And we filmed on the city's streets, inviting members of the public to hold up a sign which indicated how much melanin they felt they had - reflected in their skin colour. We produced a DVD which also included a short drama about the dangers of skin bleaching, a behind-the-scenes chat with actors, and vox pops in which people describe their skin colour. The films and activities for teachers to use with the films are on the colour coded website.
